The Dachshund: Small Body, Big Personality!

Hi, it’s Sanji.

And today, I’m going to tell you about a friend… whom I know very well.

Before I reveal his name, here’s a little clue:
he’s close to the ground, he’s got a feisty personality,
and personally… I have three uncles just like him and a friend who looks a lot like him.
Needless to say, I know what I’m talking about 😌

Okay, here we go. We’re talking about the Dachshund.

The Dachshund is the dog often nicknamed the “sausage dog.”
But behind that slightly funny nickname lies a real story.

Originally, the Dachshund comes from Germany.
Its name, Dachshund, literally means “badger dog.”
And for good reason: its role was to flush out badgers, foxes, or rabbits right from their burrows, thanks to:

• a highly developed sense of smell,
• a long, low-slung body,
• and real digging skills.

Among the Dachshunds I know (hi, my uncles!),
there’s also one trait that comes up often:
👉 the Dachshund is a grumbler at heart.

Not in a mean way, mind you.
But it likes to express itself, give its opinion, let you know when it’s happy…
and also when something doesn’t sit right with it at all.

It’s a breed that was historically bred to work independently, so communication is clearly part of the package.

Today, the Dachshund is often seen as a companion dog. But its history explains why it enjoys:

• scent games,
• exploration,
• activities that stimulate both his mind and his paws.

As always, every dog is unique,
but understanding where he comes from helps us better understand what he likes.

This short-legged friend has made its way through history, the countryside, social gatherings… and even the circles of famous personalities.
