The Belgian Malinois Shepherd: Built-in motor, optional brake

Well now, friends…

Today, I’m going to tell you about a dog that runs three times faster than me, jumps twice as high… and sometimes thinks faster than his human:
the Belgian Malinois.

This athletic dog from Mechelen (hence its name) in Belgium is easily recognizable by its fawn-and-black coat and black mask, which give it the look of an action-movie hero.

It has three cousins in the Belgian Shepherd family:

- the Tervueren
- the Groenendael
- and the Laekenois
(we’ll introduce these other friends someday)

But the Malinois is easy to spot: it’s the only one in the group with short hair.

And even though it sometimes resembles a German Shepherd, it’s generally slimmer, lighter…
and often even more explosive when it comes to energy.

Because yes, the Malinois is, above all, a working dog. Originally, it helped farmers.

Today, you’ll also find them in law enforcement, the military, rescue operations, and search and rescue.

In other words: this dog loves having a mission.

Every Malinois has its own style:

- some are like rockets,

- others think they’re secret agents,

- and there are those who analyze everything before you’ve even finished speaking.

- And then… there are also the “clingy” types.

The kind that follow you everywhere like a very muscular shadow. (I’m not judging. I do the same thing.)

To be happy, the Malinois needs to move, think, explore, and learn…
In short, a routine that already tires out a lot of humans just by reading about it.

But when its needs are met, it’s an incredibly loyal, intelligent, and endearing companion.

A little bonus detail:
The Malinois sheds a lot during its spring and fall shedding seasons.
Fortunately, its short coat is fairly easy to maintain with regular brushing.

To conclude...
the Belgian Malinois is a mix of brains, energy, and loyalty on canine steroids.
